“If you want to go fast go alone. If you want to go far, go with others”.
Spencer West once said this in one of his speeches for a school assembly. Spencer volunteers in Kenya and India helping children. He is an inspirational speaker and he climbed the highest mountain in Africa on his hands. He did the climb on his hands because Spencer West has no legs. When he grew up he got a university degree and now works together with Me to We and Free the Children in third world countries building schools and supplying clean water for people that need it.
Spencer recently made a difference by fundraising over $500,000 on his climb of the highest mountain in Africa, 80% on his hands. The mountain is called Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania with a peak at nearly 6,000 metres above sea level.”
On Saturday, June 22nd Whistler Water will be sponsoring an event called One Climb with Grouse Mountain and Free The Children and Spencer West will be there too. By hiking the Grouse Grind to the peak of Grouse mountain you can raise money and awareness for Free the Children clean water projects in Africa. If you haven’t done the Grind before you’ll be amazed by how you’ll feel once you’re finished. Not only will you have tackled a challenging hike but you’ll have contributed to tackling the problem of a lack of clean water in a third world country like Kenya. And if you’re feeling like your legs won’t take you a step further at some point on your climb (and trust me, it could happen – I speak from experience!), think about Spencer and remember “strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will”.(Mahatma Gandhi).
I’ll finish this post with some more of the speech written by my brother for a public speaking event at our school.
“Spencer inspires kids by sharing speeches at schools. His goal is to tell kids they can redefine possible like Spencer does. He says we can all make a difference that can start as something small like donating a few dollars to a charity. Spencer West has made a difference and he thinks you can too. He believes and proves there is no can’t, there is no won’t, only how.”
